Everybody else is writing about the election results this morning, so I guess I might as well put my 200 dollars in also. I'm sure it's not worth that much, but here goes anyway.
I've tried very hard to be open minded about all of this, but it's been really difficult. It's been an extremely long run of campaigning and I'm really glad it's all over with. I'm tired of all the "nasties" that have taken the form of political ads that were supposed to be informative, but have only shown how juvenile ALL of the politicians can be. The Franken/Coleman senate race in Minnesota was the absolute worst. I truly think in all cases it's the pot calling the kettle black. I don't think any one of them is any worse or better than any other. I'm among those who feel that we could have run better candidates for the position of leader of the United States. I voted for McCain because I felt he was the lesser of two evils.

Mr. Obama really scares me. I won't go into all the reasons why because that's been covered before. I only hope that he will be able to follow through on all his promises. But then which politician ever can - or has?
One of the blogs I read on a regular basis is written by an American who is currently living in Israel. She writes frequently of the shelling that takes place, the air raid sirens that go off and the conditions that she lives under. When I read her entry this morning she gracefully accepted Obama's win but then followed with a very interesting and what I felt, accurate paragraph. I would like to quote her at this time:
"Now that the election is over, can some of the zombefied supporters please at least acknowledge that this man is not a heaven-sent saviour who can do no wrong? That he has surrounded himself with some of the very worst sleaze and scum in politics and, in fact, in the world, that he has given no proof that he is capable of doing anything positive as an executive? Please? Because if I read one more paean to the beauty, the wonder, the holiness and the charisma of him I may just have to put out my eyes."
As I watched Obama's acceptance speech last night and the cameras panned the crowd in Grant Park I saw many faces with tears streaming down their cheeks. People were gazing up at Obama as though he were the returned Messiah. It made me want to gag. I only hope that those of you who voted for him did so because you thought he had the abilities to straighten out the mess that we are in now, not just because he is black.
Then I read AKK's blog. Please go read it - it's a very enlightening entry. I think her viewpoint duplicates mine. To quote her:
"I like keeping my money, and yet I feel obligated to help others. Except there are a lot of people that don’t Deserve my help. It’s complicated. Apparently, I might fit in with the Old School Republican party. I don’t know. I don’t believe I have the right to tell anyone else whether they should keep a baby, nor that they have no right to love who they love. I’m farily vehement on the first, not so vocal on the second."
And that, my friends, is all I have to say about it. Congratulations to those of you who are ecstatic about Obama's win. I only hope for the sake of the United States and the world that you are right.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, whoever is in the president's office can't really make HUGE changes due to the checks and balances of the senate and house. So, if there is true blame to be thrown around for the state of our country, they are the ones who truly deserve it. Even though I would really LIKE to blame Bush! LOL!!! I agree with you on the Coleman/Franken race. The ads from the Republicans were shameful, nasty pieces of work. I am so glad it's over. Sorta. Doing a recount!!!
I agree that the president can't make huge changes, but when all the checks and balances lean the same direction I fear that just about anything they believe in will go through. Also, I don't think Franken's ads were any cleaner than Coleman's. They're all a bunch of jerks. What happened to "What can I do for my country, not what can my country do for me?"
I most assuredly didn't vote for him because he's black. I voted for him because he seems to have common sense and a smartness and a charisma that won't embarrass us. The tears you saw were possibly for the fact that a black man was voted into the seat of president. That is an incredibly amazing thing given the fact that there are some many bigoted Americans. And if that can happen for a black man, all sorts of things can happen for a black man that will make him a real person. Not just a person who's got skin that's black.
I don't really know who the American Israeli is talking about, specifically, in Obama's campaign. All I know is that he had a pretty savvy group leading him along. That being said, what politician doesn't smell of snake oil?
I don't know, for a fact, if we're right. But my gut tells me that we're pointed in the right direction.

I am a believer in working hard for what I have earned - and DO NOT appreciate someone with an "agenda" giving it away. I will donate my money to where I want, when I want, and resent being forced to "spread the wealth" around. I resent paying for some jerk who can't get their lazy a$$ up off their couch to have their basic needs taken care of. If you have the ability to work, WORK and don't depend on the social programs that some people (some of my special needs trust people, for example who CAN'T work) deserve so much...but the system is set up to DISALLOW them from the benefits that they so desperately need! Trust me, I have first had experience on this, several different cases within the last six months.
Example: One of them earns $637.00/month on Supplemental Security Income, his health insurance is $350.00 (state of ND) with huge deductibles.
Guy still has to have a place to live. Food? Yeah, that's a need also. Electricity, and so on. He's a brain injury person from an accident that was NOT his fault. He deserves more than what he is getting. Oh, and food stamps? $76/month. Can anyone feed themselves on that?
Mr. Lazy who just chooses not to work because WalMart (where my husband works part time) or fast food is BENEATH HIM! That's who's (for the most part) going to be the beneficiary of my hard earned funds. Not people like Mr. Actually Deserves it.
I have worked hard to get where I am. I shouldn't have to contribute to the laziness class. 2 degrees in 4 years, and slowly working my way up in my profession for ten years.

I'm also worried, The racial thing means nothing to me white, black or orange is not the historic thing here. The troubling part of Obama is his ability to say nothing and be adored for it. The closest analogy I can find is those mirrors at the carnival that make you look taller and skinnier than you really are. The masses seem to hear what they want to hear regardless of what the man says. He says change and we fill in the blank. What your probably scared about is what happens when the reality sets in and the masses find out that the "change" is just what you say when you want to get elected. When you see his supporters swooning as if they're at a Stones concert you just have to wonder why? As Americans we have to understand that no one needs a politician, they produce nothing, most actions they take reduce our freedoms, limit our ability to prosper. Food, water, toilet paper, and warm winter boots, are all thins we need. When you see the masses acting as they are today you just have to wonder why they think the answer is a guy who's as undefined as Obama seems to be. When you empower a politician with your hopes for success, and not your own innate abilities you're probably in for a letdown. So listen to the rhetoric, understand that it's all so much BS, then go find your warm boots and go out and make it on your own. Change isn't coming.
Anonymous, whoever you are, I so agree. Obama has already proven your point of view with appointing his Chief of Staff, one of the most radical people in politics. As you know, I didn't vote for Obama either. I'm willing and ready to support his presidency. I hope that the changes he has promised come to be. As with every election, we know what we've been told. Now it's time to see what really happens. God bless us all.
